Football Queensland (FQ) North is thrilled to announce it will bring an exciting new edge to age-old rivalries at a massive three-day City v Country representative event this May.
The leading men’s and women’s players from across North Queensland are set to come together to represent their regions at Endeavour Park in Cairns over the Labour Day long weekend.
“This ambitious concept is a great way to showcase the outstanding playing, coaching and refereeing talent we have here in North Queensland,” said Declan Carnes, General Manager – North Region.
“We have never done a representative event quite like this before.
“The best players from Cairns, Townsville and surrounding areas will all gather in one location, pull on a City or Country shirt and try to secure bragging rights.
“This is an excellent opportunity for them to test themselves at an inter-regional level while providing a vehicle for us to connect our competitive landscape in line with FQ’s Strategic Plan.”
Local coaches will be asked to select six teams in total – four men’s, two women’s.
The men’s teams will include one City side and one Country side from the FQ North – Northern Conference, plus one City side and one Country side from the FQ North – Southern Conference.
All four teams are scheduled to face each other in a round-robin format, with the top two progressing to a final.
Meanwhile, there will be a single women’s side selected to represent the FQ North – Northern Conference and a single women’s side selected to represent the FQ North – South Conference.
The teams will face each other twice over the course of the event, which runs from Saturday, 1 May to Monday, 3 May.
“Cairns and Townsville have always had a very healthy sporting rivalry and I have no doubt these games will be extremely competitive,” Carnes said.
“Combining that with the City v Country element adds a whole extra dimension. I am sure the regional players will want to prove a point in those matches. It is going to be exciting to see who comes out on top!”
FQ North is now accepting submissions from coaches who are interested in leading a team.
